Land Story Hebrides is about more than visiting ancient sites. It’s about understanding the landscapes of Lewis and Harris, the people who lived here, and the stories written into the land itself.

BEHIND Landstory Hebrides

Exceptional Guided Tours
I’m Ian McHardy, a professional archaeologist, and I’ve been working in Lewis since 2000 (moving here permanently in 2005) after graduating from the University of Glasgow in 1999. Over the years, I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from university-led research excavations and surveys, to commercial archaeology required by the planning system, and alongside Comann Eachdraidh and community groups across the islands. I gained a Master’s degree in the Archaeology of the Highlands from UHI in 2021.

Explore the Past
I’ve always believed that the landscape of Lewis and Harris tells its own story, and I’m passionate about helping people discover it for themselves. Whether I’m leading a guided walk, speaking to local groups, or working on a dig, what matters most to me is making the islands’ history accessible, engaging and meaningful. Sharing the archaeology of these places isn’t just my job, it’s something I genuinely care about, and I love seeing people connect with the past as it comes to life in the landscape around them.
Beyond the Guidebook
With a detailed knowledge of the islands and their landscapes, I’m able to go beyond a standard tour, adding real context and insight to every place we visit. Through Land Story Hebrides I try to offer a variety of tours to allow people to see the island in different ways. Whether you’re looking for a broad journey through every age of settlement or a more focused, personalised experience, each walk is designed to be engaging, flexible and shaped around what you find most interesting.
